red giant, a component of an occultation variable star that varies in apparent brightness from 4.9mag to 5.7mag over a period of 20 years. It was once thought to be the largest known star in the observed part of the universe. It is 2,400 times larger in diameter than the Sun, with an average density of only three millionths that of water. Distance from Earth is 5,000ly.
