The brightest star of the constellation with an apparent magnitude of 2mag. Along with the stars κ Vel and ε and ι Car of the Carina constellation, they form the so-called False Cross, which beginner observers often mistake for the real Southern Cross. However, unlike the Southern Cross, it is slightly larger, more symmetrical, and less bright, and its arm does not point towards the southern celestial pole.
