This star is a prototype of a class of variable stars, whose brightness changes very little due to repeated shrinking and expanding of its diameter with a period of several hours. During 4.65 hours, its brightness fluctuates between 4.9mag and 5.2mag. δ Scuti also has a blue companion at a separation of 52.6", which nicely contrasts with the main, bright yellow star.
