a nearby star that has the third fastest known motion after Barnard's and Kapteyn's stars - 7.04" per year. In about 100,000 years, the star will move from the Big Dipper to the constellation of the Wolf! Because it is 28 light-years away, its fast apparent motion is due to its true cosmic speed rather than its proximity. Such stars are part of the Milky Way galaxy, which is why they are as old as globular clusters. Arcturus of Shepherd is the clearest example of them.
