The "Guardian Bear" is the brightest star in the northern sky and the fourth brightest (0.0mag) after Sirius, Canopus and Alpha Centauri. It is targeted by the fourfold elongated downward conjunction of the stars of the Big Dipper's axis. Arcturus is the nearest orange giant, 35 light-years away and about 30 million km across, and is 20 times larger than the Sun, but exceeds it by up to 100 times in luminosity.
