γ Velorum Vel 8mag 2022-01-21 17:00:00 skybber 2022-04-08 14:29:44.425945

a binocularly resolved binary whose main component, 2mag, is the brightest known Wolf-Rayet star, very warm and unstable, ejecting a lot of matter at an astonishing rate. Even in simple mass spectrographs one can see distinct emission in the blue region of the spectrum, lines of highly ionized atoms shining in the vast warm envelope illuminated by the star. γ Velorum is at an advanced stage of its evolution and shines about 3,800 times brighter than the Sun. But this won't be the case forever. After a few million years, it could explode as a supernova. It's 840 light years away.
