the brightest star in the constellation with an inverted brightness of 2mag. Together with the stars κ Vel and ε and ι Car of the Carina, they form the so-called False Cross, which novice observers often confuse with the true Southern Cross. Unlike the latter, however, it is slightly larger, more symmetrical and less bright, and its arm does not point to the region of the south celestial pole. |
