an occultation variable star of the Algol type, with magnitude variations from 3.3 to 3.8 over a period of 3.95 days. Suitable comparison stars are γ (3.6mag), μ (4.3 m), ο (3.6mag), and ζ (3.7mag). λ Tau is actually much more luminous than Algol, but is located at a much greater distance (480 light years). Its light changes were first observed by J. Baxendell of England in 1848.
