the brightest star in the constellation (0.85mag). An orange giant of spectral class K5, its name is of Arabic origin and means "next" - because it rises after the Pleiades and follows them in their daily movement from east to west. It is 65 light years away from us and represents the eye of Taurus in the sky. Its actual luminosity is 125 times that of the Sun. It projects quite randomly into the open star cluster of Hyades, which actually lies beyond it.
