an unusual variable star, massive and unstable, which may explode as a supernova in the future. In 1677, Edmund Halley recorded that the star had brightened to 4th magnitude. In 1730 it reached second magnitude, by 1827 it had brightened to first magnitude and during April 1843 it temporarily became the second brightest star in the sky after the spread, with a brightness of -0.8mag! In the following years its brightness decreased and from 1868 it ceased to be visible sometimes without a trier, as its brightness was around 6th magnitude. In the infrared, however, it is still the brightest source in the sky.
