the brightest star in the constellation at 2.44mag. It is a yellow-white star of spectral class A7, 49 light-years away, forming the constellation's rhombus along with β (3.21mag), ζ (3.35mag) and ι (3.52mag). At its centre lies the star ξ Cep.
