a very interesting star, one of a trio of stars that emerge from the constellation Orion. Together with 53 Ari and AE Aur, it apparently once formed a star system in the constellation Orion, the fourth component of which exploded as a supernova 2-3 billion years ago, disrupting the stability of the other three and causing them to gradually move away from their original location. In our galaxy, μ Col is moving at around 100 km/s.
