"La Superba" is the name given to this distinctive red star by Italian astronomer Angelo Secchi in the 19th century. It is a variable star that changes its brightness from 4.8mag to 6.4mag over a period of 157 days. The striking red hue can be seen quite easily in 50-60 mm telescopes. The unusual, deep red colour of this and similar stars is due to carbon molecules (which are abundant in the atmosphere) absorbing the star's blue light.
