a lovely double star, consisting of blue-white components 4.7mag and 4.8mag at a distance of 7.8", which can be resolved with a 5 cm telescope. Mesarthim appears to the naked eye as a 3.9mag star. Historically, it is interesting because it was one of the first double stars discovered with a telescope, registered by the English naturalist Robert Hooke in 1664 on the occasion of a comet sighting. It is 204 light years away. |
