in antiquity, people saw this star as a competitor, the antipole of Mars (anti-Arés: against Mars), because the striking red star is very similar to the "Red Planet". The Old Arabic name Kal al Akrab is no longer used, but the Latin name Cor Scorpion - Heart of the Scorpion - is derived from it. It lies at the intersection of the elongated junctions of the sides of the Hercules quadrilateral. The physical guide, greenish in colour and 5.4mag in brightness, can be found at a distance of 2.9" preferably with 200mm and larger binoculars, as it is obstructed by the main star's glow. At least 250x magnification is recommended for visual resolution. It orbits the main component in approximately 555 years.
